Each type of extinguisher is clearly identified by a band of colour indicating the contents, and in line with European standards each extinguisher carries clear fire classification graphics to indicate which type of fire it can be safely used on. All of our products carry the British Standards Kite Mark.

Fire extinguishers and blankets should be correctly located, commissioned, installed and identified. This can be achieved by following the guidance in:

Free Site Survey & Quotation
If the type of the equipment and its locations are not known, a site survey needs to be conducted prior to the installation. We will visit your premises on an agreed date and time, and record the locations of suitable extinguishers and blankets with regards to:

required floor area coverage

travel distance of ? 30 m to every extinguisher

classes (A, B, C, D, 'E' and F) and severity's of fire hazards present

existing fire protection equipment
Equipment Delivery, Commissioning & Installation
Once you accept the quotation, we will arrange an appropriate date and time of the installation. The equipment will be then delivered, commissioned and installed in accordance to the survey results and aforementioned British standards.
The majority of equipment installations employ drilling of solid walls. Annoyance can be prevented by notifying the occupants in advance.
Fire Extinguisher Maintenance
Fire extinguishers should be serviced regularly to maintain their continuous availability. Absolute Fire Protection Ltd provide quality fire extinguisher service in accordance with BS 5306-3:2009.

Why you should care
Fire extinguishers and blankets – just like any other fire protection equipment, should be subjected to a regular maintenance (see RRFSO article 17 ). It's obvious that the responsibility to appoint a competent individual or company to carry out such maintenance is of Responsible Persons.
The article, however, does not explain the importance of such service. As the fire extinguishers age, they become more prone to faults. Poorly serviced extinguishers are very likely to fail just when they are needed the most – in a fire emergency. Some of the reasons may be:

Wear and tear Extinguishers are usually quietly positioned on their brackets most of their existence. However, their long lifespan in combination with activities such as tampering, relocating, collisions with furniture or luggage, drops due to bracket failure or adverse weather conditions, can render them unusable or even dangerous.

High pressure Every fire extinguisher contains pressure ranging from cca. 7 to 300 bar. This pressure constantly pushes outwards against the walls of the containing body, lining and insulation. It is not unusual for the pressure to slowly leak from the extinguisher, leaving it unusable.

Internal corrosion Extinguishing agents, many (if not most) of them being corrosive, are in constant contact with extinguisher's internal parts. The critical parts are usually protected with corrosive-resistant paint, rubber or plastic lining, or are made of inoxydable alloys (e.g. stainless steel); nonetheless we still find many extinguishers with their linings bubbled or ruptured, with rusty pressurised cartridges or walls. Corroding extinguishers are especially unreliable and dangerous.
Fire blankets should be inspected at the time of extinguisher maintenance for any damaged, missing, incorrectly positioned or used units. It is oftentimes a case that the cloth is returned to its container after being used on fire – when, in fact, it should have been disposed of instead.
Service schedule
Unless your fire risk assessment states otherwise, the fire extinguisher service should take place one year (±1 month) after a major extinguisher installation and annually thereafter, until extinguishers become unserviceable. In short, fire extinguishers are usually serviced annually, preferably in the same month their installation took place.
Thoroughly serviced extinguishers should last indefinitely, except for carbon dioxide and primary sealed dry powder extinguishers, which must be overhauled after 10 years and completely destroyed after 20 years.
BS 5306-3:2009 introduced some changes, the most significant one being the extended servicing of plastic headcap extinguishers, which are now subjected to a headcap replacement on every extended service.
Instead of having the headcaps changed every five years, we recommend having the plastic headcap extinguishers changed to more durable metal headcap models when the extended service is due.
Fire Extinguisher Recharge
If any of your fire extinguishers is discharged (partially or completely) in an emergency, by an act of vandalism, or has a low pressure – and you have no available spares, don't wait. The fire extinguisher may be needed before the service is due.
Just let us know which extinguishers need recharging and we will reply to you with a quotation. If possible, please include types of extinguishers and their corresponding quantities (e.g. 10x 6l foam, 4x 2kg CO2, 1x 9kg powder).
Recharge of a fire extinguisher does not affect its service schedule. If a fire extinguisher happens to be discharged and recharged 1 year prior to its extended service date, it will have to be recharged again as the extended service includes test discharge and recharge.
Low pressure
In some cases, the extinguishing medium remains and the pressure leaks. Dry powder extinguishers are especially vulnerable – even by accidentally releasing a small amount of powder, the powder will make the valve lose its sealing ability and the pressure will eventually escape completely.
